The Federal Law nº. 11.274/2006 extends to nine years the elementary school program with the enrollment of children at the age of six. This policy has led to expansion of discussions regarding its implementation and issues arising from this process. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyze scientific research trends produced on the nine year elementary school program. This is the state of the art on the theme, which was conducted through literature review of qualitative character, and through the analyses of theses, dissertations, periodicals and articles published in events between the years 2005-2011. The output signals to the plurality of themes that run through the production about the nine year elementary school program, which highlights the importance of discussions in the cities and states as well as the importance of the various forms of interpretation and meanings that a law and its guidelines can promote within the school.
