Abstract

SOFIATO, Cássia  and  REILY, Lucia. Em busca de uma iconografia para a língua brasileira de sinais: um estudo histórico. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.02, pp.183-190. ISSN 1519-3993.

This study aims to analyze aspects of the Iconographia dos signaes dos surdos-mudos, the first Brazilian sign language dictionary published in 1875, whose author and illustrator was a deaf man, Flausino José da Costa Gama. The objective is to show how important this publication was in the history of the education of the deaf in Brazil, while also reporting on Flausino da Gama’s role in constituting a national iconography for sign language. The work is made up of 382 signs, not counting the manual alphabet. By analyzing this work, we intend to clarify the visual and lexical elements that are still used today to enhance the creation of other works of the same nature.

Keywords : Dictionary; Deaf Education; Iconography; Sign Language; Deaf.
