This research shows that the policy of the Elementary School enlargement to nine years brought many discussions, which caused changes in the institutions and in the teaching practices. For such, legal guidelines by the Ministry of Education and resolutions by the National Council of the Education have been established presenting necessary transformations to the teachers, managers and all those involved with Elementary School. Besides showing the legal questions and some studies around the Elementary School enlargement, of the literacy and of the playful practices in the childhood, the conceptions and practices of the teachers are mentioned, carrying out a case study with three teachers of the first year in public schools. As investigation instruments, interviews and written reports of the collaborators were used, with a subsequent analysis of them, in order to realize how the teachers reflect the Elementary School enlargement and which practices prevail in their classes. It was possible to notice that, even facing the challenges, the concerns with the childhood, playtime and literacy are projected on the practices in the first year.
