Abstract This essay’s main objective is to reflect on the construction of the individual and the processes of socialization in the context of the relationship between families and schools, with the mutations suffered by the two educational instances in the contemporary period as background. First, the essay discusses, from a literature review on the subject, the conceptual changes on the notion of socialization, confronting the classical approach of Durkheim and the “sociology of experience” of Francois Dubet. Then, it discusses the constitution of contemporary individuals within the two instances of socialization - family and school - by analyzing the strain experienced by individuals, between the need for social integration and the construction of individual experiences.
