This is a qualitative study in nature and it brings, a comparison between the management of a public school and a private kindergarten school in the city of São Luís, state of Maranhão, Brazil. In order to analyze the differences between the management of early childhood education from public and private schools in the city of São Luís, we sampled one school from each administrative level, seeking to observe management practices carried out on both of them. Aiming to know the differences between their realities and establish a critical comparison between the two schools. For that to take place, a discussion was held on the development of conceptions of school administration, according to authors such as Antonio Carlos Libâneo and Benno Sander, a brief overview about the relationship between public and private education in Brazil, based on ideas of Luiz Fernandes Dourado, bringing enrollment data from public and private schools in Maranhão, and the analysis of data obtained in field research from interviews and observations. It was observed that both schools have management principles guided by the participatory-democratic conceptions and technical-scientific, but in different proportions, which shows a clear difference between the practices developed in each one.
