The recent definition of learning standards for pre-school education in Portugal is discussed in this essay, which evaluates in particular the contents of the learning standards for language education. The main argument is that this definition introduces a curricular emphasis to pre-school education, representing, for language and literacy education, the definition of a set of goals that are conceptually fragile, restricted and, in several cases, locally and globally incoherent with other documents that regulate this educational level.
