The objective of this article is to analyze national policies for teacher training in Early Childhood Education, from 1990, and discuss the consequences of these policies in practice. The study is linked to the discussions of the area and reaffirms the need to invest in specific training for Early Childhood Education teachers. The analysis revealed that there has been growing discussion in recent years leading to transformation into effective policies and practices, indicating that part of the teachers’ claims have been included in documents and educational policies. However, when analyzing the influences of these policies in the municipal context, mismatches were found between the legislation and national policies and what happens in the policies and practices. This result reinforces the need to invest in teacher training, pointing out the long way to go in order to ensure initial and continuing teacher training in Early Childhood Education.
