Abstract

With the promulgation of the Federal Law nº11.274/2006, Brazilian Elementary School now has a duration of nine years instead of eight, with the inclusion of six-year-old children. This measure has administrative, educational and financial implications and development of education, generating queries sent to the National Council of Education. The aim of this article was to analyze the manifestations of this Board regarding to the expansion of Elementary School from eight to nine years in the period of 1998 to 2009. The methodological procedures used in this research were a bibliographic and documentary analysis. The total of sixteen manifestations analyzed were grouped into three categories of analysis: the initiatives for the manifestation of the board, the counselor reporters, and treated issues. The survey detected “silence” in these manifestations on the following issues: demand for schooling, adequacy of physical space and material, and the curriculum proposed for the new reality.
