In connection with oral history, the aim of the paper is to propose a careful analysis of the potentialities of narratives, not only for scientific research, but for the community that is established as an interlocutor in this investigation. Thus, we characterize one of the perspectives of narratives related to the practice of historiography, which has guided studies of the history of education development of mathematics teachers in Brazil. We discuss practices and perspectives of the construction of narratives through interviews present in two research groups: i) History of Research in Mathematics Education (HMER) and ii) Oral History and Mathematics Education Group (GOHME). Presuppositions of historiography, experience, communication and research methodology are used to characterize the narrative proposed. Thus, the paper highlights the need for a study, in addition to research procedures, that considers the time of narrative construction of the individual along with the researcher and the individual’s participation in the construction of the narrative.
