Given the growth of research in the field of education, particularly after the establishment of graduate studies in Brazil in the 1980s, the aim of this article is to contribute to the reflection on the specificities of research in educational policy and to discuss the problems and challenges in the consolidation of an area of knowledge that is currently booming in the country. We delimit the specificities of research in educational policies, highlighting the heterogeneity of approaches favored by the multi and interdisciplinary nature of the field and the more horizontal rather than vertical growth of areas of research. We point out to the need for developing a theoretical-methodological approach that encourages the consolidation of research in the field of educational policy
