Abstract

NUNES, Daniel de Freitas  and  SILVA, Kátia Augusta Curado Pinheiro Cordeiro da. Curriculum and initial teacher training in human sciences: A case study at the Universidade Federal do Tocantins. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2014, vol.19, n.2, pp.183-194. ISSN 1519-3993.  https://doi.org/10.1590/edpuc19n2014011.

The aim of the present study is to analyze the curriculum of the undergraduate course in History at the Universidade Federal do Tocantins, located in the northern region of Brazil. For this purpose, the curriculum of the course was analyzed at two moments: we compared the structure and syllabus of the current curriculum and the previous one, and the socioeconomic profile of the students admitted to the course. Through this analysis, based on different curriculum theories and initial teacher training, we compared the current curriculum with the previous one and found a considerable reduction in the number credits that leads to theoretical academic abbreviation and inadaptability to the norms established by the national curriculum guidelines. The curriculum analyzed corresponds to only 49% of the credits required by the national guidelines. It may be concluded that the present curriculum focuses on technical education that is theoretically compromised and low class.
