Abstract

NOGUEIRA, Marlice de Oliveira e. Good student, good son : Tension between the construction of self and school success in families of teacher-parents . Educ. Puc. [online]. 2015, vol.20, n.2, pp.67-79. ISSN 1519-3993.  https://doi.org/10.1590/edpuc20n201501.

The present study is part of a set of studies conducted since 2008 on the effects of being a teacher on the family dynamics and educational practices and the children's educational trajectories. A group of 40 families participated in this qualitative study that aimed to discuss the processes of construction of the self experienced by the children of parents who are teachers. The results showed that, in general, teacher-parents constantly endeavor to promote the education of their children, but this effort and its impact on the children's schooling vary greatly. Social origin, objective conditions of existence, teaching experiences and the family dynamics shape educational practices and impact the relationship they establish with the school life of their children. This, in turn, produces different effects on the lives of children who experience a constant tension between the construction of themselves and school success.
