The paper is the result of a research study entitled "The movements in higher education teaching: specificities in different areas of knowledge and their influence on teaching practice". We sought to analyze the difficulties in teaching practice of nine professors in the field of health sciences at a public higher education institution. In order to accomplish it, we used data from narrative interviews related to one of the following guiding principles of the interview: academic knowledge and, more specifically, indicators of difficulties found in teaching. The results showed that challenges in the teaching career include: teacher training; lack of professional practice at the beginning of the teaching profession; model of teaching as knowledge transference; new profile of students and technological innovations; management of ethical and moral values; pedagogical solitude. The need for investment should be considered by the institution and faculty in order to seek improvement and overcome challenges.
