Abstract

PIOTTO, Débora Cristina  and  ALVES, Renata Oliveira. Admission of students from working class to a public university: Beating the odds almost by chance. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2016, vol.21, n.2, pp.139-147. ISSN 1519-3993.  https://doi.org/10.5965/151939932112016017.

Affirmative action policies have been formulated in an effort to increase the access to higher education among workingclass students, who, in general, consider that there is a remote possibility of being admitted to a public university. The objective of this study is to discuss what lead these students to start believing that there could be a chance of attending a public university. Therefore, in-depth interviews conducted with two working-class students of a public university are analyzed. It was found that the possibility of attending a public university opened up by chance in the cases analyzed. It happened due to an event or help of a person within their social circle. Finally, the importance of the work sphere in the school trajectory of students by providing access to different social circles was also analyzed.
