Abstract

GRISA, Gregório Durlo  and  CAREGNATO, Célia Elizabete. Education and ethnic and racial relations from the representations of teachers. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2016, vol.21, n.3, pp.271-279. ISSN 2318-0870.  https://doi.org/10.5965/151939932112016271.

The article analyzes representations of teachers concerning the ethnic and racial relations in schools based on the issues raised during a course of continuing education for teachers who work in public schools in Rio Grande do Sul. The training course focused on human rights and we used a specific instrument to challenge the teachers to position themselves. We discuss the characteristics of racism in contemporary Brazil, its implications for education and analyze the empirical data regarding the concepts of race and whiteness. The results show the teachers’ difficulties in dealing with the notion of race. Moreover, racism is seen as a minor problem in comparison with economic inequalities and, according to a minor number of teachers, Brazil has harmonic ethnic and racial relations. The data show the persistence of the myth of racial democracy in the representations of teachers and the need for teacher training policies in this matter based on the effective implementation of the National Law 10.639.
