The teachers’ mission in education, the teachers of young minds, was one of the pedagogical issues to which Unamuno, the distinguished Rector of the University of Salamanca, devoted many pages of analysis and reflection in his essayist contributions. Focusing on this issue, the present article endeavored to unravel the Unamunian concept of teachers with regard to their mission for promoting the training of a unitary conception of knowledge in their students. For Unamuno, the fragmentation of knowledge was a severe educational blunder that was to be combated vehemently. Against such fragmentation, inspired by his Romantic background, Unamuno proposed a holistic and integrated vision of knowledge imparted in the classroom based on the ethnic cosmovision of the Spanish people (intrahistory). There were to be no ideologically neutral educational contents; only the spiritual backdrop of the “fatherland” community to which students belonged could unify the knowledge taught in class, which necessarily had to be consubstantial with the spirit of the population itself (Volksgeist) concerning the individualized expression of the soul of humankind itself (Allgeist). And it is here where we can appreciate the nationalist temper proposed by Unamuno as the idea of nationality for the author is always conceived as a door into universality.
