Pedagogical coordination is a relatively new occupation in the Brazilian school reality, which has been increasing numerically due to the approval of laws that favor democratic and autonomous management in schools. The activities of a coordinator are related to the articulation and organization of educational work in schools. Considering the importance of pedagogical coordination, a research was conducted to analyze the role of pedagogical coordination in educational municipal networks in Bauru, in the state of São Paulo. This article addresses some results obtained by a document analysis of career plan and salaries in 18 municipalities located in the region. Some discussion areas were established in the analysis: legal status of pedagogical coordination regarding concerning position and activities; appointments and/or position; process of access and choice; legal requirements for pedagogical coordination, and legally established working responsibilities. It was found that pedagogical coordination is present in all groups of municipalities analyzed, although there were heterogeneous conditions of assignments, criteria and preferences/conditions of access, choice criteria, and assignments. It was also possible to observe that the activity and/or position has fragile conditions for exercising autonomy and democratic school management as the coordinator must carry out a set of tasks that are not always related to the pedagogical and collective dimension of the job.
