Postgraduate courses in Education in Brazil carry out studies on teaching practices and scientific research. Considering that these academic activities involve academic writing, object of the present study, the following questions emerged: “what makes academic writing so challenging for students?” After all, “why is it so difficult to write?”. The aim of this research was to analyze the questions and rationale of postgraduate students in Education in Rio Grande do Sul concerning the difficulties inherent to academic writing. This exploratory qualitative case study was based on the assumptions. The data collection involved an action research and the data were analyzed using content analysis technique. In this study, students showed a significant concern regarding the writing of theses and dissertations, particularly meeting the specific writing requirements and formatting of the texts in accordance with the technical norms adopted by the course. Students recognize the importance and need for engagement in learning and decision-making, as well as facing the complex challenges in academic writing. Academic writing is a difficult task for students, which is influenced by many factors such as: insufficient reading, insecurity concerning one’s own ideas, difficulty in carrying out writing tasks, lack of familiarity with academic writing, and difficulties developing grammatical, semantic and syntatic knowledge.
