SARAIVA, Ana Beatriz; PEREIRA, Beatriz  e  CRUZ, Judite Maria Zamith. Juvenile violence, bullying and academic underachievement: Childhood memories and the onset of deviant pathways. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2019, vol.24, n.1, pp.89-107. ISSN 2318-0870.  https://doi.org/10.24220/2318-0870v24n1a4245.

This case study is part of a wider investigation on violence and criminality. It examines juvenile violence, namely bullying, and its impact on academic achievement through interviews from the perspective of Portuguese male offenders currently serving sentences. Ten participants aged 19 to 46 years were interviewed on the Azores islands. An interview guide with the different topics was specifically developed for the investigation. Data analyses were based on content analysis proposed by Bardin. The descriptive and interpretative analysis focused on specific episodes of violence and bullying in school. The findings revealed four pathways of juvenile violence, namely, bullying, involving the victim/bully, victim defender, victim with an efficient coping strategy, and bystander. The study analyzes the triggering factors and maintenance dynamics considering academic achievement and the implications for secondary prevention and differential diagnosis.
