Abstract

PINHEIRO, Viviane Potenza Guimarães; ARANTES, Valéria Amorim  and  ARAUJO, Ulisses Ferreira. Purpose and professional confl ict resolution within the perspective of the Theory of Organizing Models of Thinking. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2019, vol.24, n.1, pp.109-124. The aim of this article was to identify ways of solving professional conflict concerning the life purpose of Brazilian youth. The sample was composed of 200 public school students, aged 15 to 19 years, from the five Brazilian geographical macro-regions. In the study, the young people analyzed a hypothetical moral conflict, in which they had to choose between following their dream of professional fulfillment and their family obligations. The Theory of Organizing Models of Thinking was used as a theoretical framework and methodological instrument for the analysis of their responses. The results indicated seven models of thought organization. Among the organization models applied, the most significant were those in which young people chose to follow their professional goals, disregarding family needs; those who decided to submit to the family needs; and others who sought to reconcile both perspectives. Despite a large percentage of young people who were somewhat concerned about the needs of others, the percentage of those who managed to reconcile perspectives is still small. From the results, as educational implications, we discuss the need to introduce conflict resolution strategies in the school routine by integrating work, life projects, desires and students’ needs, with the purpose of helping young people discover their life purpose considering the integration of values and feelings.
