Abstract

LANZA, Maria Lucia  and  JACOMINI, Marcia Aparecida. Good teachers from the perspective of High School students. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2019, vol.24, n.2, pp.194-212.  Epub June 19, 2019. ISSN 2318-0870.  https://doi.org/10.24220/2318-0870v24n2a4065.

In this article we discuss what a good teacher is from the perspective of high school students in public schools. The research aimed to discover what characterizes a good teacher for the students. We did a qualitative research on education, including a literature review, studies of education’s classics, field research applying questionnaires to 392 students, and an interview with five of them, who were chosen based on their answers to the questionnaires. We used Laurence Bardin’s content analysis method to classify and organize the responses to the questionnaire and interviews in three interrelated categories: personal characteristics of the teacher, didactics, and interpersonal relationships. The research was carried out in 2015-2016 at a state school located in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Among the results we highlight that students recognize the relevance of all teachers, not just the ones considered good, acknowledging each teacher’s specific and important role in their lives. Their views reaffirm a humanist conception of education present in the classics, one that places emphasis on the following values: respect for diversity, affectivity, equality, commitment, creativity. To the students, it is important that the teacher induces a “strangeness of the world”, allowing them to question, doubt, inquire, “acknowledge that they do not know”, and look for new answers.
