MATOS, Gláucio Campos Gomes de  e  FERREIRA, Maria Beatriz Rocha. Education in Amazonian communities. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2019, vol.24, n.3, pp.367-383. ISSN 2318-0870.  https://doi.org/10.24220/2318-0870v24n3a4604.

The article brings a reflection on education in the Amazonian communities, more specifically theriver-dwelling inhabitants living on the banks of the rivers of the State of Amazonas (Brazil). The researchis based on Norbert Elias’s theory and ethnographic fieldwork. The Amazonian population represents amixture of different ethnic groups and live in sui generis conditions, adapted to the hot and humid climateand adjusting to the variations of the flood and ebb periods of the river, to periods of rain and drought. Theycultivate small plots for subsistence, practice extractivism, organize themselves in a collective activity knownas ‘puxirum’ whose aim is mutual aid, and have access to the institutionalized education from schools withurban characteristics. The ‘traditional’ knowledge used in daily life in these communities has its roots in theancestral cultures of indigenous peoples, but has been interconnected with the processes of social change.Schooling is part of this framework of knowledge and in recent years has been striding in the Amazonianuniverse, and often without recognizing the traditional knowledge of the Amazonian people. The challengein the education of river-dwelling (ribeirinho) communities is to obtain the recognition of the importanceof their daily life knowledge and to introduce it to the content of institutionalized education, as it hasalready been done over the centuries, allowing the maintenance of the life style of these human groupsin the Amazonian universe.
