Down syndrome is generated by the excess of genetic material on chromosome 21, causing several comorbidities, such as cognitive and motor impairment, and creating concern for parents and teachers regarding literacy. Considering that, the present research aims to investigate the Brazilian publications on literacy for people with Down syndrome. The literature review, which did not have a defined period for the selected publications, had the general objective of presenting the results of Brazilian researches that address this theme. The method consisted of surveying and analyzing the texts available in the databases of Portal de Periódicos Capes, Scientific Electronic Library Online, Google Scholar, and the Digital Library of theses and Dissertations of the University of São Paulo, through searches with the expression “Down Syndrome” and “Literacy”. The main results were organized according to the following classification: studies that address strategies used by children with Down syndrome to read and/or write, studies that correlate phonological skills, research that describes how the literacy process was, and those that focus on the teacher’s role during that process. We conclude that there is a lack of studies that describe the cognitive processes involved in the literacy process of persons with Down syndrome, as well as studies that correlate verbalization and written production for that syndrome.
