FRANCA, Thaisa Cristina  e  SOUZA, Regina Maria de. Devaluation of the work of the educational translator and interpreter of Brazilian Sign Language: impacts on teaching and health. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2021, vol.26, e215361. ISSN 2318-0870.  https://doi.org/10.24220/2318-0870v26e2021a5361.

This paper presents a specific part of the dissertation on which it is based, which discusses the precariousness of the work of the educational translator and interpreter of Brazilian Sign Language, a field of research that is still little explored. The methodology involved survey and analysis of research already carried out in the translation and interpretation field of Portuguese Sign Language, as well as searches on the websites of public universities that form interpreters, on the National Translators Labor Union, on the Deaf National Educational Federation, and on the Brazilian Federation of the Professional Translators and Interpreters Associations and Interpretation Guide for the Sign Language, aiming to identify the challenges faced by the interpreters on different fronts, such as: workload, functions, remuneration, time spent in school, occupational health and formation. The empirical part was only a pilot run, which can be amplified in another study in order to verify if the findings in literature coincide with the ones perceived by experienced translators with an undergraduate degree. The results point to the necessity to broaden initial and subsequent formation courses for translators and interpreters, to demand a university degree in the publishing of the entrance exams, to offer better salaries, and to adequate the functions so that they do not overlap or substitute the work of the teacher, since this context increases the risks of work-related illnesses.
