Abstract

SOFIATO, Cássia Geciauskas  and  MENEZES, Roni Cleber Dias de. Double invisibility: education of deaf girls of the 19th century in Brazil. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2021, vol.26, e215431. ISSN 2318-0870.  https://doi.org/10.24220/2318-0870v26e2021a5431.

The foundation of the Imperial Instituto dos Surdos-Mudos, in the 19th century, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, started the education of deaf people in Brazil. This institution aimed at the intellectual regeneration of deaf people and attended, since the beginning, deaf boys and girls, following what was expected for the education of low-income classes and the prescriptions of the time for each gender. Given the invisibility of the education of deaf girls in the Special Education literature, this study aimed to outline and reflect upon the educational trajectory of deaf girls in the Imperial Instituto de Surdos-Mudos, from 1857 to 1873. It is a document-based qualitative research. The corpus was established by primary sources: reports from principals, ministers and State secretaries of the Empire, official publications from the imperial time, as well as laws on public education in the period. Through this study, it was possible to see that the teaching process of deaf girls was similar, in some aspects, to those of hearing girls from the same socioeconomic origin and race. The education of deaf girls in the institute was finished for a series of reasons, among which was the lack of structure to attend the students.
