Much attention has been drawn to the growth of the press as a source or object of research, as it is a fertile ground for discussion, given that it acts in the ideological political field. The purpose of this article is to discuss the press as a source of research, highlighting the educational journal “A Escola”, published between 1906 and 1910, in the state of Paraná. Specifically, the objective was to review the first Congress of Public Teachers of Paraná, held in 1910 and reported in the journal, as well as the interests expressed in the theses presented at that event. This article is the result of postdoctoral reflections, which the problematic was the questioning of the aforementioned congress theses as a possible way of legitimizing liberalism, as well as the analysis of the interests expressed in them. To this end, a bibliographic survey and document analysis was carried out, grounded on “A Escola” journal as its primary source. Therefore, for the methodological procedures, the literature was initially reviewed addressing the topics: History of Education in Paraná; liberalism in Brazil and educational press. In the second stage, the survey, collection and cataloging of historical sources related to the journal “A Escola” issues was carried out, as well as the materials produced about the journal and the first Congress of Public Teachers of the State of Paraná. In the third stage, historical sources and supporting for the research and interlocutions were collected and organized in order to support the review and systematization. The fourth stage of the survey included the systematization of the materials collected, based on historical materialism. It was found that although the organization of the Congress was an important initiative as a space for debate and discussions on education in Paraná, the theses discussed did not dwell into fundamental aspects of education direction, such as teachers’ training.
