Abstract

NABARRO, Sergio Aparecido. Élisée Reclus: anarchist movement, education, and Geography teaching. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2021, vol.26, e214993. ISSN 2318-0870.  https://doi.org/10.24220/2318-0870v26e2021a4993.

This article integrates a more comprehensive research, in progress, on the theoretical and methodological advances proposed by the French anarchist geographer Jacques Élisée Reclus (1830-1905) in order to understand the social dynamics between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. The aim of the paper is to analyze the contribution of the thinker to the construction of the model of education defended by libertarians, as well as of the school and the teaching of geography along the same lines. The text defends the thesis that the contribution of this intellectual occurred within a broader process which envisioned the construction of a free and non-dogmatic society supported by a network of intellectuals dedicated to the construction of a theoretical basis that would be the foundation of the anarchist premises aimed at social transformation. For this, an extensive bibliographic research was carried out on the European libertarian movement, as well as on Reclus’ life, work, and method. After the selection, reading, and analysis of the texts, we cross-checked historical, political, and methodological information to support analyzes of the thinker’s contribution both to the consolidation of the libertarian movement in Europe and to the education and teaching of geography.
