MEDEIROS, Letícia Miranda  e  FONTOURA, Helena Amaral da. Feedback to educators: an analysis of a letter from an English teacher. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2022, vol.27, e226536. ISSN 2318-0870.  https://doi.org/10.24220/2318-0870v27e2022a6536.

The contact with undergraduate students is one way for universities to become aware of the real demands found in basic education and, consequently, to develop practical actions in training that can mitigate the challenges that teachers face in classrooms. This article aims to reflect on teacher training for youth and adult education. Thereby, a former student of a language course and current teacher of adults was asked to write a letter addressed to the professors of the Faculdade de Formação de Professores, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. The purpose of the request to write a personal letter was due to the need to give feedback to the institution about how its professors have been contributing to the training of its former students, who are now teachers in schools. The letter was analyzed based on the thematization methodology proposed by Fontoura, which consists in marking words, expressions, themes in order to establish a relationship with the theorists. Authors such as Tardif, Freire and Nóvoa were used as theoretical foundation to support the theme found in the letter, which is ‘the challenge of teaching English in youth and adult education classes’. With the analysis of the letter, it was possible to perceive the importance of studying Paulo Freire’s texts in undergraduate courses and the relevance of the discussion of researches on youth and adult education among English language trainees so that future teachers understand that childish teaching needs to be abolished in this modality and that meaningful classes can be made available for this audience. Therefore, it is expected that, with the publication of the preliminary results of this research, Faculdade de Formação de Professores, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro as well as other institutions dedicated to teacher training will include themes associated with the peculiarities of youth and adult education in their curricula so that future teachers can better deal with the age and interest diversity present in these classes.
