Abstract

JESUS, David Alan Araújo de; CRUZ, Josias Martins dos Anjos  and  PACHECO, Maria Lúcia Tinoco. The place of culture in the initial training of Chemistry teachers in Northern Brazil. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2023, vol.28, e236454. ISSN 2318-0870.  https://doi.org/10.24220/2318-0870v28e2023a6454.

The present article analyzes the pedagogical political projects of the Chemistry teacher training courses of the federal institutions of Higher Education in Northern Brazil. It seeks to identify whether culture-related contents that compose the guidelines for teacher training are currently included in the curricular proposals. The courses’ political-pedagogical projects were obtained from the institutions’ websites and via e-mail. Data analysis proceeded from a division into thematic units. We found that cultural aspects, in general terms, are currently included in the curricular matrices. In particular, there is a generalized approach to cultural and ethnic issues to the detriment of the relationship between traditional Amazonian/indigenous knowledge and scientific knowledge. Little value is given to the Amazonian culture in the analyzed documents, which distances the scientific-cultural debates favorable to the meaning of Chemistry teaching. Thus, it is urgent to rethink the described curricula, so as to contribute not only to scientific learning, but also to the valorization of traditional knowledge.

Keywords : Curriculum; Education; Teacher training; Multiculturality.
