Abstract

GONZALEZ, Beatriz Adriana Rodríguez  and  SANCHEZ, Judith Alejandra Hernández. Reference meanings associated with the concept of intuitive probability. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2023, vol.28, e238269. ISSN 2318-0870.  https://doi.org/10.24220/2318-0870v28e2023a8269.

The intuitive ideas of probability that arose through Pascal’s and Fermat’s contributions at the end of the Modern Age remain valid, promoting the meanings associated with them in the curricula of the different educational levels. In this research, the different meanings associated with the intuitive concept of probability are identified, taking the history of statistics as a reference. The notion of the meaning of a mathematical concept is used from didactic analysis through its three components: conceptual structure; representation records; and phenomenology. The content analysis method was applied to 5 documents that describe the historical development of statistics. As results, terms such as random phenomenon and concepts such as equiprobability, as a representation of ordinary language, have been identified as reference meanings. In all cases, these components make sense in the context of games of chance.

Keywords : Mathematical concept meaning; Teaching probability; Intuitive probability.
