Abstract

RABELLO, Luiz Ricardo Gonçalves  and  BELLO, Isabel Melero. Curricular Policies for the English teaching in the State of São Paulo (1931-1971): expectations and limits of the school context. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2024, vol.29, e248565. ISSN 2318-0870.  https://doi.org/10.24220/2318-0870v29e2024a8565.

The objective of this article is to present the trajectory of curricular policies for the teaching of English in the public schools of São Paulo State from 1931 to 1971. The data presented in this article are results of a master dissertation that investigated the trajectory of curricular policies of English teaching from 1892 to 1971. Document analysis was the methodology used to verify student files in two elementary schools and also decrees, laws and regiments published in the state official journal. The research showed that English was a curricular discipline in the elemenatry schools of São Paulo in the analyzed period and that, starting in 1931, it was supposed to be taught directly in the English language, not being allowed to use the student’s mother tongue. However, its trajectory in the schools programmes was permeated by discontinuities and by distances in relation to what was made official by legislation and the objective conditions of the schools to carry out such proposals.
