The objective of this article is to highlight the concept of negative education within Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s theoretical pedagogical conception, specifically, for children’s education. This concept is not developed in most academic works that deal with questions about pedagogy or education in the work: Emílio ou da Educação (Emilio or the Education). For this reason and, to bring understanding to the importance and theoretical place of this concept, our explanation is divided into four parts, namely: 1) Education must be thought of in a program of education for the human being as such, which encompasses private education and public, from children to adults, articulating nature and civilization, therefore; 2) It is necessary to distinguish between nature and artifice, preserving and developing the former for the exercise of real freedom in society; 3) To understand the philosopher’s position, it is necessary to return to the historical context of his time, which was established in the clash between the aristocratic tradition and the transformations theorized by the French Enlightenment, and, finally; 4) We present a definition of the relevance of the position defended by Rousseau regarding a child’s education, negative education, which promotes their natural development against the mistakes of social artificialization.
