SANTOS, Andreia Mendes dos et al. Discussions in educational psychology in Southern Brazil about violence in schools. Educ. Puc. [online]. 2025, vol.30, e2514544. ISSN 2318-0870. https://doi.org/10.24220/2318-0870v30a2025e14544.
Violence is a complex social phenomenon with historical roots and whose manifestations transcend criminality. In schools, the phenomenon of violence, although not a new element, occurs on a daily basis and its characterization is changing. Historically associated with indiscipline, violence in schools is a growing phenomenon with different expressions. This article brings together the knowledge of educational psychology to discuss structural violence in schools, with a focus on the southern region of Brazil. Three steps were taken: the construction of the state of knowledge of the productions of the Psychology of Education axis of Associação Nacional de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa em Educação Sul and Banco de Dados de Teses e Dissertações the Instituto Brasileiro de Informação em Ciência e Tecnologia (BDTD-IBICT); the analysis of data from the Atlas of Violence and the School Observatory; and news broadcast on the portals of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. The results showed that, among the scientific productions, the association of school violence with bullying prevails in a reality that points to the presence of other expressions of violence in schools. There has also been an increase in episodes of extreme violence through attacks on schools and massacres of the school community. The Observatories found that only around 8.8% of the records correspond to the Southern Region, indicating the fragility of reports of violence in the school context. Therefore, discussing violence in schools is a challenge, because while the school’s role is to educate for peace, respect for diversity and combat any kind of prejudice and hatred, violence in schools reflects the processes of inequality in society. In view of this, it is necessary to problematize and be proactive in relation to this phenomenon that compromises learning, living together and the physical and mental health of educators and students.
