Information and communication technologies (ICT) open up important possibilities for the learning of Maths. Thus, it is essential that teachers have the opportunity to be trained in their use. Taking into consideration that teachers’ education is a continuous process, a continuing education program was designed for recently-graduated students of Mathematics at IF Fluminense, Brazil, as they begin their professional practice. This proposal was called T-PROIM -Technologies in the Teaching Practice of Beginner Teachers of Mathematics. A Social Network on the Internet (ISN) was implemented on the Elgg platform to support T-PROIM. This network aimed at integrating ICT to teaching activities, and is based on the social-historical theory, in particular, on the importance of the social context and mediation in the development of high-order mental processes. The qualitative study was carried out as a case study, in which data were collected by means of questionnaires, interviews, observation and register of contents posted on the ISN. Design flexibility and resource configuration of the ISN by the teachers themselves was considered an important educational feature, since it could cater for individual needs and teaching environment. The possibility of sharing information created a less formal educational space which, in turn, was a motivation for more formal activities. Analysis of results also allowed for the identification of social capital dimensions in traditional activities and of contents posted in the network. Such dimensions contributed to raise self-confidence towards the pedagogical use of ICT, and to promote personal, social, and cognitive development of the teachers involved in the research.
