This article reprises the recent history of information and communication technologies in Brazil and Portugal considering the current challenges followed by a historical retrospective with emphasis in three specific, strongly marked moments: the origins of computer technology in education, media integration and technologies, networks, hypermedia and the search for introducing low-cost, small mobile equipment in schools. Finally, it underscores the importance of public policies for digital technology implementation in schools to overcome inequalities in the educational system, evidenced by students’ performance, using the digital generation’s language.
