Abstract In a national context of adoption of the Moodle platform by Portuguese schools it becomes particularly relevant to evaluate the conception, development and exploration of learning environments in the several disciplinary areas and identify good practices for the educational community. Results from an Action-Research work are presented which sum up the use of a Moodle based environment for ninth year History teaching in elementary education. A socio-constructivist teaching project was developed which followed active strategies able to promote the students’ exploration, collaboration and reflection. A b-learning teaching regime was implanted which potentiated the work and collaboration tools offered by the Moodle system. We finish this work with the identification of strategies and pedagogical approaches which promoted, particularly, increased and significant participation and collaboration as well as knowledge construction supported by new communication dimensions between students and with the teacher.
