In the last few years, in Portugal, educational authorities, schools and teachers have shown an increasing interest in using Interactive Whiteboards in the hope of improving the academic performance of pupils. However, although the rhythm of introduction of this educational technology in the classroom has been augmenting steadily, there have been few published studies that investigate the practices of its introduction and utilization. This study examines through a multiple case study strategy the adoption of the Interactive Whiteboard by teachers of Mathematics in five secondary schools at the city of Guarda. The results show that the introduction of equipments has been carried out in most cases without planning, having the initial training been conducted between teachers. The equipments are not yet used by the majority of teachers and those who use them do so with low frequency and do not take full advantage of its potentialities. Thus, the main obstacles and key success factors to its use are described, as well as the expectations of teachers in relation to Interactive Whiteboards. This study intends to contribute to a reflection that potentiates a more effective use of this educational technology.
