In recent years, interest has grown in the use of e-portfolios in educational context as a result of the potential that is attributed to them in promoting and evaluating competencies. This qualitative, interpretative investigation sought to study the potentialities and limitations of the use of e-portfolios in schools of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, and to propose models of e-portfolios that are appropriate to the reality of this educational level. The following items were performed: 1) a global analysis of e-portfolios produced at District of Santarém within the scope of the CBTIC@EB1 Project - Basic Competency in ICTs Project during the school year 2005, and 2) creation of three case studies, which analyzed and discussed the way in which teachers, students and monitors are involved in the dynamization of the e-portfolios. Based on the results obtained, two e-portfolio models were created, which were adapted to the specific realities of Portuguese schools in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, strengthening the educational advantages of this methodology and overcoming the difficulties identified in the previous empirical study.
