This paper analyses the affiliations established between users of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) composed of parents and teachers of handicapped students. This virtual environment aimed to promote interaction and sharing of experiences related to people with multiple handicaps. The main objective of this work is to study the characteristics and breadth of the friendships established within this virtual environment using social network analysis methods. The results presented in this paper derive from data available in the personal pages of the study’s participants. These data were investigated with an essentially sociocentric perspective; this implied researching the group which interacted for eight months. The indicators analysed comprise the density of the established network, its level of concentration, the degree of inclusivity, the participants which stood out as most influential and with most prestige, as well as the subgroups that emerged within the network. The results found indicate that the virtual environment created was favourable to the establishment of affiliations or pro-social relationships between the participants, with a greater impact on the teachers than on the parents. It can be inferred that the relationships established between the participants have a favourable effect on communication and information sharing. Despite the extent of the relationships between the participants not having been particularly large, specially amidst the parents, the study is innovative as it establishes an online relationship between elements crucial to the development of children and youths with multiple handicaps: their parents and their teachers.
