Technologies of information and communication have been increasingly growing, especially in recent times. The core characteristic evidenced in the use of mobile equipment and software, in the last four years, has been their portability, mobility and network access. The technological development, including software applications available for the implementation of three-dimensional contents, has been following this trend. Hence, it is important to know whether and how these contents are being integrated in educational situations, namely regarding augmented reality and m-learning. Thus, herewith, we present a synthesis of Portuguese and international cases studies and works related to the use of 3D augmented reality, framed by a chronological perspective on the evolution of technologies of communication and information. Our main goal, with this knowledge mapping, is to contribute to the state of art in 3D augmented reality technologies in education. In addition, we aim to frame the creation and implementation of 3D content in Portuguese Higher Education, specifically in mathematics, within a research work and project that is being developed at the Universidade Aberta and the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria.
