Abstract: Many researchers consider that knowing the trends and issues of research in distance learning is important for the development of knowledge and practice in the field This Delphi study aims to identify and categorize research priority areas in distance education in Portugal. A number of experts in research and teaching in distance education in Portugal were inquired in two online surveys, performed in two Delphi rounds. The present study builds upon a Zawacki-Richter’s (2009) taxonomy of research areas in distance education, of three levels: macro level (systems and distance education theories); meso level (management, organization and technology); and micro level (teaching and learning). The results show that, according to the Portuguese experts’ opinion, overall all areas should be considered; however, six areas were deliberated as very important to the development of research in distance education in Portugal, which correspond to the following subcategories: 1) quality assurance; 2) interaction and communication in learning communities; 3) instructional design; 4) theories and models; 5) innovation and change; and 6) professional development and faculty support. Building a theoretical framework for research in distance education in Portugal can contribute to organize the knowledge in the field and guidance for practitioners, and to identify priority areas or research gaps and future directions, as a way to develop vigorous, coherent and systematic research
