Abstract

LODI, Ana Claudia Balieiro  and  MOURA, Maria Cecília de. Primeira língua e constituição do sujeito: Uma transformação social. ETD [online]. 2006, vol.07, n.02, pp.01-13. ISSN 1676-2592.

This article discusses the importance of sign language as the first language (L1) for deaf people and the teaching-learning of the dominant language as the second (L2), focusing in particular on subjects that had delayed access to Sign Language. Having as its foundation a research made by one of the authors, deaf subjects’ lack of knowledge was pointed as regards the difference between the Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS) and the Portuguese language, although all were users of the first one. One concluded that there is a need to take measures so that a real transformation of these subjects can be undertaken, mainly regarding the recognition of LIBRAS’ social value, for without this process deaf people are left with only the submission to the Portuguese language, because this language continues to have a central social-ideological role in the constitution of the linguistic processes and the subjectivity of these subjects. This change will only occur if a transformation in the relations established by these subjects in the different social spheres be done. In this way LIBRAS will be able to assume the place of L1 for these subjects independently of the period of life where it be developed, determining thus a transformation concerning the places assumed in society by deaf people.
