Abstract

MINAMI, Thiago Amaral. A tecnologia na construção da identidade social entre imigrantes de segunda geração: relato de experiência em escola brasileira no Japão. ETD [online]. 2013, vol.15, n.03, pp.534-546. ISSN 1676-2592.

Brazilian schools in Japan accept young immigrants who communicate in Portuguese. In social disadvantage, this minority group suffers consequences from labor migration, such as identity issues, absent family, weak friendship bonds and prejudice. Our work explored how digital media is used by the students and opportunities for it to enhance learning. In a four-meeting workshop, using quantitative surveys and qualitative analysis, we developed a digital fotonovela with 21 students aging from 12 to 17 years old in order to debate socioeconomic and psychosocial problems faced by the Brazilian migrant community as a result of financial crisis in 2010 The adolescents produced a fotonovela in which key questions concerning the Brazilian community’s issues were mentioned, such as prejudice, difficulties on finding a new job, lack of perspectives for the future and the fragility of relationships. Digital media facilitated the creation and divulgation of the fotonovela. On the other hand, we met difficulties to adapt horizontal and collective action within a school culture based on hierarchical knowledge transmission. Digital media use created an opportunity of expression and reflection about issues related to immigration and minorities’ condition among the adolescents, which opens space for new attempts. However, actions to involve students in a horizontal learning structure are required, including a particular approach on media literacy.
