Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the importance of ethnographic studies to comprehension the school institution, based on the description and analysis of the methodology of a doctoral research conducted in a public elementary school of basic education located in Campinas, Sao Paulo. The doctoral research proposed to problematize as a program of the Department of Education of São Paulo - the School Protection System, which aims to ease the violence in schools - was developed in the institution studied. For this, from the observation and recording of everyday school life, was sought, in particular, observe the insertion of the main representative of this program in the school - the School and Community Moderator Teacher. Besides, it was necessary the approach with the reality being investigated and the knowledge of various aspects of the community served and the subjects that constituted the institution. Through research, it was found that despite the advancement of educational research in Brazil, there still remains a need to expand the ethnographic studies that contribute to the understanding of this everyday school life. The research methodology allowed the observation of human relations, of youths in its interface with the problem of violence, of the different facets of a school system, and made it possible to broaden the analyzes and overcome a naive vision that points easy solutions to the public schools.
