Based on socioeconomic variables available in the Microdata from National Secondary Education Examination (Enem) 2012 for students of the State of São Paulo (Brazil), this article seeks to analyze if the social background of the candidates has a differentiating effect on characterization, aspirations and academic performance. Students were divided into two major groups having as selection criteria parental schooling and family monthly income. The results indicate that the social origin of students plays an important role in the differentiation of students, their aspirations and performance. Have a family with an income above 20 minimum wages or have one parent with higher education substantially increase the chances of the students do the exam at an age considered suitable, not having stopped studying in high school, have a white skin color; aspire to enter the public higher education and have objective conditions to do it and do better in performance in objective tests and writing. Finally, the text reflects on the uncomfortable fact that in 2012, in the richest state of the Brazil, social backgrounds still make difference, as the datas seem to suggest.
