Abstract

PAIXAO, Alexandro Henrique  and  TREVISAN, Anderson Ricardo. EDUCATIONAL CINEMA IN PERFORMANCE: RAYMOND WILLIAMS, FILM ANALYSIS AND PRODUCTION OF A KNOWLEDGE. ETD - Educ. Temat. Digit. [online]. 2019, vol.21, n.3, pp.738-759.  Epub Sep 23, 2019. ISSN 1676-2592.  https://doi.org/10.20396/etd.v21i3.8652292.

In this paper we will discuss the role of cinema as an educational tool in the perspective of Welsh author Raymond Williams (1921-1988). Best known for being one of the forerunners of so-called Cultural Studies and for studies involving literature or theater, Williams also had significant intellectual output related to film and education, both in practical terms, with his film tutorials in adult education or in projects (in this case, together with the English director Michael Orrom), and in theoretical terms, where it defends the necessity of the construction of a new film criticism. Both aspects will be addressed here, ending with the author's analysis of Wild strawberries (Ingmar Bergman, 1957) in which he presents an example of this criticism. It is intended to point out the relevance of Williams in the discussion of the relations between cinema and education, a barely investigated theme about this important interpreter of culture and society.

Keywords : Raymond Williams; Education cinema; Film criticism; Adults education; Tutorial.
