This paper presents the analysis of an experimental continuing formation program designed for generalist teachers with music; the formation focused on play considering its potential to mediate the construction of attitudes, fluencies and musical knowledge. Analysis shows that play is recognized as part of the generalist teacher function; it is a way to approximate generalist teachers to music, helping them to bring to consciousness specific musical knowledge, allowing them to create music activities adapted to his/her own possibilities. The conclusions indicate that generalist teachers recognize that musical knowledge makes up their professionalism; they can be more interested in intentional musical work as far as they think reflexively about the activities involving music and play in face of the specificities of children at different moments of development and also the impact of music on humanized and global education.
