Abstract

VOLTAS, Fernanda Quatorze  and  KRUPPA, Sonia M. Portella. The theater in the students’ education: the perceptions of the teachers from an unified educational center (CEU) in the city of São Paulo. e-Curriculum [online]. 2016, vol.14, n.1, pp.307-331. ISSN 1809-3876.  https://doi.org/10.23925/1809-3876.2016v14i1p307-331.

This article brings out a reflection on the results of a research, which has as its object the perception of educators who work in CEUs on the role of theater in the students’ education, in these educational spaces, located on the outskirts of the city of São Paulo. Works of Caldwell Cook, Herbert Read, Peter Slade, Bertolt Brecht, Augusto Boal, Ingrid Koudella, Marilena Chauí and Paulo Freire provided the theoretical basis that supported this research. The qualitative approach, as understood by Bogdan and Biklen, and the case study, proved to be suitable for the investigation that has been done. The methodological procedures included the examination of documents and conducting semi-structured interviews with educators, students and managers of a CEU and of the central offices of SME/SP. The results showed incongruence between documentary sources and interviews, precluding conclusions about the consensus and the emphasis on the role of theater in the students’ education. The only noticeable agreement between the two sources of data occurred in relation to the perception of theater as entertainment, whose absence in the analyzed records was compatible with the short emphasis given to such a perception, by interviewees. This suggests that although there is no consensus about the role of theater in the education of students, this art has been understood as more than an entertainment by the CEU educators.
