ANDRADE, Marcelo  e  PISCHETOLA, Magda. Hate speech in social media: addressing difference through media and information literacy for learning. e-Curriculum [online]. 2016, vol.14, n.4, pp.1377-1394. ISSN 1809-3876.  https://doi.org/10.23925/1809-3876.2016v14i4p1377.

The paper reflects upon the radicalization of hate speech in social media environments. It presents a Brazilian case study of a recent conflict, which arose in social media, and involved the federal congressman Jair Bolsonaro and the educational magazine Nova Escola. It analyzes the social media as a possible space for discrimination and addresses the difference as a valuable source for learning. It focuses on the relevance of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in this landscape. As a conclusion, the paper discusses MIL in dialogue with education for tolerance. It argues that developing tolerance in social media would require the development of three fundamental skills: (i) the ability to search for sources of information and build a critical sense; (ii) the ability to respect and value the differences among human beings in multicultural societies; (iii) the ability to accept and articulate, in an ethical perspective, the concepts of “minimum of justice” and “maximum of happiness”.

Palavras-chave : Hate Speech; Differences; Social Media; Media and Information Literacy (MIL).
