The training of teachers is the first formal period of diverse professional knowledge and competence acquisition that are needed to answer adequately to the challenges of the profession. In Portugal, a new juridical regulation for teacher’s professional habilitation has been published recently, one that in indicates new guidelines for initial training of early childhood educators and teachers of the 1st and 2nd cycles of basic education. Hence, this text seeks to reflect and discuss the guidelines stipulated for the initial training of these professionals. These new guidelines emphasize the mastery of scientific knowledge that early childhood educators and teachers of the 1st and 2nd cycles will teach and its transmission in the classroom. Following the appropriateness of initial training courses for teachers to the Bologna process, these new guidelines resulted in changes in the adopted model of training and changes in the curricula of the courses that make up these teaching professionals.
